Teatro Paraguas

ALL TEATRO PARAGUAS EVENTS FOR
MARCH and APRIL ARE:

LETTER FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR,
ARGOS MACCALLUM

Dear Friends,

Because of the present global situation and the Governor’s directives, Teatro Paraguas has canceled all events in both Mainstage and Second Space venues for the next two months. These included poetry readings, play readings, movie screenings, children’s theatre, and three major productions.

Unfortunately, Ironweed Productions had to cancel their production of The Aliens in our Second Space mid-run. While Teatro Paraguas and Blue Raven Theatre were able to cancel productions which had just begun to rehearse, Ironweed’s production had incurred all of its expenses, including rent, royalties, stipends and production costs.  A typical production in Santa Fe can cost between $6000 and $15,000.  We are working closely with Ironweed Productions Artistic Director Scott Harrison to explore ways to revive The Aliens once we can open the doors to the theatre again.

Since the duration of the pandemic is uncertain, we are not launching a direct appeal at the moment, but do appreciate, as always, support in the form of tax-deductible contributions large or small (please visit our donation page by clicking on the "donate" link at the top of this page).

We are in communication with other theatre companies in town to devise mutual aid strategies to help each other weather the storm.  Because there are a lot of theatre companies but very few affordable theatre venues, we feel it is important to work together as a theatre community to have an integrated response to the pandemic and emerge as strong as possible once the danger is over.

While we are not in immediate danger of having to shut down because of lost income, we are working with International Shakespeare Center and the Santa Fe Playhouse, who also have leases in the Richards Ave. Business Park, to form a unified bloc in negotiating with our landlord.  We will not let the nascent mid-town theatre district stumble or fall.

We hope that Ironweed Productions can revive their production, and have left The Aliens set intact in the shuttered theatre.  Likewise, we hope New Mexico Actors Lab can produce their fifth season this summer at Teatro Paraguas and The Swan Theatre, although they have canceled their first production scheduled for May.

This will be a make-or-break moment for Teatro Paraguas, the most serious and unprecedented challenge in our 16-year history.  It is not a time for panic and fear; rather, it is a time for common sense and perseverance, and acceptance of what we can and cannot control.  And compassion for all.

Best wishes and be safe.
